Hollywood legends do sci-fi, horror comics

Bluewater Productions has nabbed some strategic partnerships for new comic book series bearing the names of genre luminaries Ray Harryhausen, Vincent Price, Roger Corman, and, most recently, William Shatner.

Under the header "Ray Harryhausen Presents," Bluewater has already launched spin-offs and sequels to many of Harryhausen's classic films, including nine titles that debuted in 2008. (Link: Bluewater Comics Expands Ray Harryhausen Line in 2008)

Vincent Price Presents is an ongoing anthology series showcasing classic gothic horror, mystery, and suspense, with Price in "a myriad of roles including host, muse, background player, and protagonist." (Link: Vincent Price Comics)

The banner "Roger Corman Presents" will cover comics where Bluewater and Corman readapt and re-imagine some of the filmmakers's popular work. "Comic books have given me so much over the years," Corman said, "that it's time I gave something back to the medium." (Link: Roger Corman and Bluewater make a Splash!)

Shatner signed on for four titles under "William Shatner Presents" -- TekWar Chronicles, Quest for Tomorrow, Man O' War, and an exclusive title Shatner will create. "Working with Bluewater is a great opportunity to bring these novels to a whole new audience," Shatner said. (Link: Bluewater Inks Comic Book Deal with William Shatner)

Santa Claus vs. Frankenstein

Reported by Comic Book Resources: Veteran comics, animation, and television writer/producer Paul Dini (Tiny Toon Adventures, Justice League Unlimited, Lost) is partnering with Top Cow Press to launch a new comic book imprint, Dinicartoons -- and the first title out of the gate this fall is Jingle Belle: Santa Claus vs. Frankenstein. Dini explains to CBR why the crossover is not so far-fetched ...

Also on the way is the eponymous anthology series Dinicartoons, planned to showcase popular Dini characters, and provide a platform for other artists/animators. See the whole interview here.

Always one to keep busy, Dini is also scripting an upcoming Science Ninja Team Gatchaman movie.

The Day The Earth Stood Still: SE

The SF classic The Day The Earth Stood Still debuts Dec 2 as a two-disc DVD and Blu-ray disc, just in time for the 2008 remake starring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly.

The 1951 classic, helmed by Academy Award-winning director Robert Wise (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, West Side Story), is widely acclaimed as one of the most influential and thought-provoking science-fiction films of all time: An alien emissary lands in Washington D.C., but he refuses to reveal his mission to any single government -- leaving the military, the politicians, and millions of ordinary people to wait in fear. Soon distrust turns to calls for violence. But one young woman and her son soon realize they may be all that stands between the human race and total destruction ...

The two-disc DVD sports a host of "out of this world" bonus features, including commentary by director Wise and Nicolas Meyer, a separate commentary by several film and music historians, an isolated music score, assorted featurettes, trailers, galleries, blueprints, a shooting script, and much more.

The Blu-ray disc includes all of the above, plus two exclusives: "Interactive Thermin: Create Your Own Score," and "Gort Command: Interactive Game."

Del Toro vampire thrillers, DC cancels Minx

Variety announced that ultra-busy director Guillermo del Toro and co-writer Chuck Hogan are collaborating on a vampire trilogy where they "trace the roots of the vampiric race back to its Old Testament origins." Volume one, The Strain, published by William Morrow next summer, details an invasion of New York City by a vampiric virus. Variety notes here and also here just how busy del Toro is between now and 2017, what with helming the two-film The Hobbit adaptation, remaking Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Slaughterhouse-Five, and adapting the Dan Simmons novel Drood.

Meanwhile, Comic Book Resources reports that DC Comics canceled its Minx graphic novel imprint. Some solicited or greenlit projects will still see publication, while others will not -- but may resurface at sister imprint Vertigo.

Updates: Godzilla, Frankenstein, Ghostbusters

Some monster movie info from Fangoria, including an interview with the director of the new Godzilla documentary "Bringing Godzilla Down to Size," breaking news about remaking classic Universal monsters, and a possible Ghostbusters reunion ...

Director talks new GODZILLA documentary
The key special feature on Classic Media's two-DVD release of RODAN and WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS is the 68-minute feature BRINGING GODZILLA DOWN TO SIZE. "The producers/writers wanted a documentary focusing on the miniature sets and art direction of the Godzilla series, which has been maligned by Western media and the ignorant for decades," says director Norman England. "I thought this was a fresh angle, and signed up as quickly as I could." (Whole story here.)

Del Toro to remake FRANKENSTEIN and JEKYLL
Guillermo del Toro, busy with J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT, has signed a multifilm deal with Universal that will see him helm new versions of FRANKENSTEIN and DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE ... (Whole story here.)

Studio makes the call for new GHOSTBUSTERS
Columbia Pictures is embarking on a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie, and has signed THE OFFICE writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg to write the script. (Whole story here.)
