The King of Monsters, the Japanese atomic firebreather Gojira (Godzilla) first appeared in director Ishiro Honda's 1954 film Gojira. The creature's name was derived from combining the Japanese words "gorilla" and "whale". When the film was recut by the distributor for American audiences, his name was changed to "Godzilla" (reportedly a result of a translation error).
